Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cooking Time: 15 minutes
Servings: 10 modaks
Ingredients:
For the Outer Dough:
- 1 cup rice flour (use Shivanya’s premium rice flour for a silky texture)
- 1 ¼ cups water
- 1 tsp ghee (clarified butter)
- A pinch of salt
For the Coconut-Jaggery Filling:
- 1 cup fresh grated coconut
- ¾ cup jaggery, grated (try Shivanya’s organic jaggery for rich flavor)
- ½ tsp cardamom powder
- 1 tbsp roasted sesame seeds (optional)
- 1 tsp ghee
For Garnishing:
- A few saffron strands, soaked in 1 tbsp warm milk
- Shivanya’s edible silver dust for a festive flourish (optional)
Instructions:
Prepare the Coconut-Jaggery Filling:
- Heat 1 tsp ghee in a non-stick pan over low heat, then add grated coconut and jaggery.
- Stir for 5–6 minutes until the jaggery melts and blends with the coconut, forming a cohesive mixture.
- Mix in cardamom powder and roasted sesame seeds (if using). Remove from heat and let cool.
Prepare the Outer Dough:
- In a saucepan, bring 1 ¼ cups water, 1 tsp ghee, and a pinch of salt to a boil.
- Lower the heat, gradually add rice flour, and stir quickly to prevent lumps.
- Cover and cook for 2 minutes until the mixture forms a soft dough. Let it cool slightly.
- Knead the dough with lightly greased hands until smooth and pliable.
Shape and Fill the Modaks:
- Divide the dough into 10 equal portions and roll into balls.
- Flatten each ball into a 3-inch disc, keeping the edges thinner than the center.
- Place 1–2 tsp of the coconut-jaggery filling in the center.
- Pleat the edges and pinch them together to seal, forming a modak shape.
Steam the Modaks:
- Grease a steamer plate with ghee and arrange the modaks, ensuring they don’t touch.
- Steam over medium heat for 10–12 minutes until the outer layer is glossy and cooked.
- Drizzle with saffron-infused milk and sprinkle Shivanya’s edible silver dust for a festive touch.
Serve:
- Let the modaks cool slightly before offering to Lord Ganesha or serving to family and friends.
Pro Tips:
- Use Shivanya’s premium rice flour for a soft, non-sticky dough that’s easy to shape.
